Renting a car for the first time is one of those milestones all young adults look forward to. You are now legally old enough to be deemed trustworthy of this investment and can use it for your next big trip. While you are basking in your new-found responsibility, also remember these key tips to help make the car rental process easier.

Do:

Remember your driver’s license and credit card.

Every reputable car rental company requires a valid driver’s license and credit card to leave with one of their vehicles. You can usually hold the vehicle when making an online purchase, but these forms of identification and payment will be required upon pickup.

In some instances, you might be able to use a debit card. However, expect to abide by certain rules like booking 24 hours in advance, not having access to certain makes and models, and putting down a security deposit.

Be aware of fees.

Usually, the rental price given upfront is the starting cost for the vehicle. It does not include fees for state and local sales taxes, airport surcharges, insurance, gas and mileage, drop-off and pickup charges, early return, licensing, additional drivers, and age penalties. Depending on your needs, where you rent the vehicle, and the time of the year, some or all of these could apply.

Don’t:

Get insurance without checking your auto policy.

car rentalIf you already have an auto insurance policy, it’s possible it will cover collision damage and personal liability for a rental car. Call your insurance agent before adding insurance to your rental to see if you could save some money.

Skip the inspection.

Before signing a car rental contract, always inspect the inside and outside of the vehicle with a company representative. They should have already noted any pre-existing damage in the contract, but you want to make sure these details line up.

If you spot any extra scratches, dents, or stains not mentioned, don’t hesitate to add them before driving away. Otherwise, you could be held responsible when you return the vehicle later.
