Fixed bridges are a proven and extremely effective method for filling the gaps in your smile after a tooth extraction. Even if you're missing several teeth, your dentist can create artificial teeth, called a bridge, which is then permanently attached to the surrounding teeth. Bridges do require some special care, so follow these tips from Dr. Robert Petrtyl, who has been providing general dentistry services to patients throughout Cincinnati for over 30 years:

  • After your procedure, your teeth may be sensitive to cold. This will eventually pass, but if it's too uncomfortable, you can start using a commercially available toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
  • The teeth upon which the bridge is mounted have to be fitted with a crown, so it's extremely important to maintain good oral hygiene habits.

Teeth with bridges and crowns are susceptible to decay by the gum line, but you can prevent this with twice-daily flossing and brushing at home and regular teeth cleanings at your dentist's office.

  • If you have a lot of decay, use a fluoride rinse and a toothpaste or gel with a high fluoride content, like Prevident 5000 or Gel Kam.
  • Bridges and crowns are usually ceramic, which makes them very strong but susceptible to cracking under pressure. Don't do anything with your bridge you wouldn't do with your regular teeth, and especially avoid chewing on ice. The combination of pressure and cold can significantly damage your bridge.
  • Don't miss your dental appointments. Your bridge requires additional cleaning from a trained professional.

At the dental office of Dr. Robert Petrtyl, you'll find a lot more than cutting-edge general dentistry services and state-of-the-art equipment: All of the staff members, including Dr. Robert Petrtyl, are committed to treating each patient the way they would want to be treated.
