According to research, 63% of American homes have cockroaches. One reason for this is because cockroaches are among the fastest running insects, which makes them hard to catch if you spot them in your home. Learning more about these bugs and how pest control can help will make it easier to detect and avoid an infestation.

What Are the Signs of a Cockroach Infestation?

If you see a roach in your home, there are likely more. The American cockroach is around 1.6 inches long, 0.28 inches tall, and reddish-brown. They’re nocturnal creatures, so you may see them when you get up to get a glass of water or use the bathroom at night.

Cockroach eggs, or oothecae, are another sign of an infestation. The bugs don't lay singular eggs, but instead, produce round brown casings that hold anywhere from 10 to 20 eggs. If you see emptied or full oothecae between furniture, in wall cracks, or in other tight, hard-to-reach places, call pest control before more eggs hatch.

How Can You Keep Them Out?

The cleaner you keep your home, the less food there is for roaches to feed on. Kitchens, for example, often provide numerous potential food sources. Never leave dirty dishes sitting out overnight, as the grease and crumbs can attract roaches.

Clean appliances like the microwave and fridge regularly and wipe down counters and tables after meals. Further, store your food in airtight containers that these pests can’t wiggle their way into.

Look for cracks and crevices in walls around pipes, windows, and doors, and use weatherstripping or caulk to seal them. This will make it harder for pests to find their way into the home. Remove any cardboard or paper that you have lying around, as roaches are attracted to the smell and use these materials for both food and shelter.
