Many people undergo acupuncture for pain management from injuries and trauma. A new version of the practice called battlefield acupuncture (BFA) serves individuals in the military. Here is some information on BFA and who can benefit from this treatment.

A Guide to Battlefield Acupuncture

What Is It?

pain management Dayton Area OHDr. Richard Niemtzow created BFA protocols in 2001 to provide military members with pain management techniques that don’t cause the same impairments as prescription drugs. BFA requires inserting small needles into the outer ear to relieve pain and tension.

This placement stimulates the cingulate gyrus, the pain-processing part of the brain. The needles prevent the pain receptors from sending signals throughout the body, reducing the body’s perception that it is experiencing a problem. This process calms the body, which, in turn, eases the mind.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) notes that service members who test positive for an opioid may be criminally prosecuted or dishonorably discharged. Armed forces personnel who use these drugs when prescribed often cannot perform their duties, like flying planes or driving military vehicles.

The military uses BFA to avoid prescribing opioids and pain-relieving drugs like oxycodone, morphine, and hydrocodone. The use of this acupuncture technique provides pain management to service members without interrupting their jobs or personal lives.

What Are the Benefits?

BFA is readily available. Many people feel relief during their first session, and the benefits extend for weeks or months without the need for frequent appointments. The dosage also never needs to be increased to feel its effects.

Acupuncture is not addictive. It’s easy to perform, and the needles are lightweight and small. People can do their jobs and live their lives without worrying about the lingering effects of opioids and/or waiting for the drugs to kick in.

Who Should Try it?

Military members who need pain management often seek acupuncture services to avoid prescription drugs and maintain their active duty status. However ANY individual can also benefit from the 80% efficacy of BFA treatments. So in short, even though it was developed for use on the battlefield, anyone can get receive and benefit from this simple treatment!
