Skin thrives when properly cleansed, moisturized, and protected from the environment. Knowing what type you have is essential for practicing the right skin care regimen. If you’re unsure about yours, learn how to identify it in the following guide, along with tips for maintaining a healthy complexion.

The 4 Most Common Skin Types

1. Sensitive

People with this skin type are prone to conditions such as acne, rosacea, and inflammation. Sensitive skin may burn, sting, or itch if it comes in contact with triggering ingredients in makeup and hair products.

To help prevent flare-ups, avoid products with alcohol, bleach, and other harsh chemicals. Instead, look for facial cleansers made for sensitive skin. Don’t over-exfoliate or scrub your face because this may cause inflammation.

2. Oily

Your skin keeps itself hydrated with natural oil glands. For individuals with oily skin, there may be excess production that clogs pores and leads to pimples. Exfoliate regularly to prevent oil buildup. Daily cleansing followed by a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid allows for moisture retention without clogging pores.

3. Dry

skin careWhen layers of dead cells cover the skin, they create a dry and dull appearance. Dryness is also linked to frequent hot showers, direct sun exposure, and heavy exfoliating.

Look for skin care products with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Steer clear of those with sulfates or detergents that can take away much-needed moisture.

4. Combination

If you notice your face gets dry in the winter and oily in the summer, you likely have combination skin. Excessive oil is most visible on the nose and forehead, where more oil glands are located. Dry areas may appear around the mouth and on cheeks.

To care for your complexion, you may need to apply products for oily or dry skin to specific areas. Foaming cleansers and moisturizers are available to tackle both types. Daily exfoliation and gel moisturizers can also help revitalize and hydrate at the same time.
