Experts recommend getting a teeth cleaning once every six months for optimal oral health. If you haven’t been to the dentist in some time, you might be anxious or uncertain about what that entails. Here’s a brief guide to help you understand what to expect at your visit.

What Happens During a Teeth Cleaning?

1. Oral Exam

Before the dental hygienist or dentist begins cleaning, they’ll examine your mouth. They’ll check for issues, including discoloration, tartar, and holes, which may indicate decay. If they see an advanced cavity or evidence of periodontal disease, they may use an X-ray to get a more detailed look at the damage beneath the gumline.

2. X-Rays

Not all dental cleanings include X-rays, but your dentist may recommend them if you have advanced damage or are a new patient. Having up-to-date X-rays can also help a dentist track changes in your dental health.

3. Plaque & Tartar Removal

After the initial assessment, the dental hygienist will start cleaning. They’ll use a special tool to scrape off plaque and tartar deposits that a brush and floss cannot remove.

This step can prevent infections and tooth decay from the harmful bacteria found in plaque and tartar.

4. Coronal Polishing

Next, the dental hygienist or dentist will use a spinning brush and special toothpaste to remove any remaining plaque particles and smooth the tooth surfaces. Then, they’ll floss your teeth and rinse with water. They may also paint the teeth with fluoride to prevent decay.

5. Examination

Finally, your dentist will examine your teeth and gums.  Then Dr. Steckelberg will talk to you about your current oral health and address any concerns. If she found any problems or identified risk factors, the team might suggest making lifestyle changes, such as brushing or flossing more often, investing in an electric toothbrush, or changing your diet.

This is the time to ask any questions about your current condition or changes you can make to maintain excellent oral health. It’s also a great opportunity to ask about cosmetic dentistry options, like teeth whitening or implants.

If you have cavities or other dental treatment recommendations, Dr. Steckelberg and her team will present you with the treatment choices along with a financial estimate.  We work hard to avoid surprises and take the time to discuss all recommendations with you.  Have your teeth cleaned regularly  at Steckelberg Dental can leave you smiling from ear to ear!
