Engines generate a significant amount of heat, and the radiator cools it down so that the metal doesn’t warp and damage any components. That’s why you should schedule radiator repair right away if you notice that it is not performing this job effectively. Here are some indications that you should remember.

When Do You Need Radiator Repair?

1. Overheating Engine

Normally, an engine will operate between 195 and 220 degrees. However, if your engine is heating up beyond this range during normal driving conditions, you may notice the heat gauge rising steadily. An overheated engine can lead to power loss, warped components, and gasoline detonation problems.

If you experience this issue, the radiator is one of the first components that you should check for issues. Quickly arrange for radiator repair so that you don’t risk driving with an overheated engine.

2. Coolant Leak

Coolant is what allows the radiator to keep the engine in a safe temperature range despite outdoor conditions. However, engines utilize both plastic and metal components, and the plastic parts can crack from extreme temperature changes, accidents, and regular wear.

You’ll notice a coolant leak if you see pools of bright red, green, or yellow fluid beneath your engine bay. Depending on the severity of the leak, you may be able to top it off and drive to a repair shop to inspect the issue. However, if it cannot hold much liquid, you should not attempt to drive.

3. Discolored Coolant

If you suspect issues with the radiator, inspect the coolant. It should have a bright color and thin viscosity. Since coolant circulates throughout the engine, contaminants can cause the coolant to look thick and dark. You may also notice sludge in the liquid that shouldn’t be there. These deposits can clog up the hoses in your engine, contaminate the system, and lead to performance problems.
