It’s normal for your vehicle’s tires to wear out and need replacement. Most are designed to last for up to 60,000 miles, but if you don't care for them properly, they will need replacement much sooner—and put you and your passengers in danger. Keeping your tires in good shape is easy, with a bit of regular maintenance.

How to Help Your Tires Last Longer

1. Have Them Rotated Regularly

Generally, it’s best to have your tires rotated every time you have the oil changed. This helps ensure that they wear evenly and last longer. In most cases, only two wheels actually “drive” the vehicles at once, causing additional wear on that rubber. Rotating the tires gives each one a chance to be the “driver.” At a minimum, this should be done every 5,000 miles.

2. Maintain Proper Air Pressure

tiresIf your tires are over- or underinflated, the amount of surface rubber that contacts the road changes. This leads to uneven wear on the tires, reducing their lifespan and affecting your gas mileage. Newer vehicles are equipped with indicator lights that illuminate when the pressure in one or more tires is too high or low. When this light comes on, check the pressure. Otherwise, check the pressure every month to ensure it’s correct; you can typically find the recommended pressure on a sticker inside the driver’s side door or the owner’s manual.

3. Drive Carefully

How you drive impacts how quickly your tires wear out and need replacement. Taking corners too fast, for instance, can cause excess wear on the edges of the front wheels. Hitting curbs and potholes can cause holes, leaks, and excessive wear, and knock the vehicle out of alignment, leading to uneven wear. Driving carefully reduces wear on the tires and your risk of a crash or traffic violation.
