No one wants to deal with a malfunctioning HVAC system. In addition to leaving your home feeling uncomfortable, heating and air conditioning repairs can be costly. Although some issues need professional service, and you should always schedule an annual inspection and tune-up, there is some maintenance you can tackle yourself to keep the system running efficiently.

How You Can Maintain Your HVAC System

1. Keep the Unit Clean

Keeping the HVAC outdoor unit clean and free of debris that can block airflow helps prevent breakdowns. Leaves, branches, overgrown shrubs, and toys or lawn equipment can keep air from entering the compressor. Maintain at least a two-foot perimeter around the unit.

It’s also useful to clean the vents and registers inside your home, keeping them free of dust, cobwebs, and debris. This ensures adequate airflow and prevents allergens from circulating around your home.

2. Change the Filter

If you have pets, leave your windows open, smoke inside, or have family members with allergies, monthly replacements are necessary. Replacing the filters prevents dust and debris from putting a strain on the HVAC parts and causing breakdowns.

3. Listen for Unusual Noises

A strange noise from your HVAC system doesn’t always mean you need air conditioning repairs. Sometimes it’s just something in the vents or a loose register bolt that you can easily fix yourself. If you hear a strange noise, investigate the source.

It could be as simple as a loose air filter. However, hissing noises coming from the walls, loud whistling, or clicking from inside the system means you need professional service.

4. Give the System a Break

During the extreme heat of the summer, the thought of turning off your AC might be unthinkable, but when the weather turns milder, give your HVAC system a break. Open windows and use fans to circulate air through your home. Doing so increases the lifespan of your system while reducing your energy bills.

You can also give your system a rest by turning off the humidifier during the summer months. When the weather turns cold, set the humidity to 35 - 45% and retire the water supply to the furnace.
