For many new drivers, being on the highway can be intimidating. Even if you’ve taken several driving lessons on it, dealing with the increased speed limit and the number of cars is much different from what’s going on in the city streets. However, it doesn’t have to be stressful. To make it easier for you, do the following.

Do:

Drive at highway speeds when you’re in the on-ramp.

To make merging onto the highway easier, speed up when you’re on the on-ramp. You should be driving at the speed of traffic on the highway. If you’re too slow at the on-ramp, you’ll have a hard time merging onto the main traffic since everyone will be moving much faster.

Practice safety first.

driving lessonsAlthough it’s true for every car ride, and you’ve heard it during every driving lesson, it bears repeating, especially for highways. Always buckle up, adjust your seat, and confirm that your mirrors are tilted at the correct angle for you.

Also, put away your cellphone. As a new driver, the fewer distractions you have, the better. If your phone has a “do not disturb” feature or a “driving mode” that temporarily halts incoming calls and texts, use it.

Don’t:

Drive slowly in the left lane.

The left lane is considered the fast lane for a reason: it’s meant for passing, or overtaking, slower cars. If you aren’t trying to pass anyone, stick to the middle or right lane. Driving under the speed limit and squatting in the left lane will disrupt the flow of traffic.

Tailgate.

Defined as driving too close behind another car, tailgating can be dangerous for all parties involved. If the driver in front of you were to suddenly hit the brakes, there’s a good chance you’ll end up hitting them.

As your driving lessons should have reinforced, you should always create a cushion of at least three seconds between your car and theirs. As long as you’re paying attention, this should give you enough room to safely slow down if they stop.
