Prescription glasses correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism so that you can see clearly. Since designer frames can be expensive, and you should take of yours so that they last a long time and don’t experience damage. Here are a handful of care tips to ensure your frames remain in the best condition.

3 Ways to Maintain Your Glasses

1. Clean Daily

When your lenses have streaks and fingerprints on them your eyes must strain to see through the glass. First, rinse them with warm water to remove dirt and dust particles that can scratch the lenses. Then, use a cotton or microfiber cloth to buff out smudges. Allow them to air dry if you don’t need them immediately, or absorb excess moisture with a lint-free cloth.

2. Use the Right Spray

glassesFor more stubborn debris, use a diluted rubbing alcohol solution. You can make your own by pouring three parts alcohol and one part water into a travel-sized spray bottle. After spraying the lenses, wipe them with a microfiber cloth—rather than a shirt—to prevent scratches.

Avoid abrasive, ammonia-based household cleaners. Their chemicals will deteriorate anti-reflective and scratch-resistant coatings on lenses, which may interfere with your vision. Additionally, they can corrode metal parts of the frames, causing them to warp and fit your face improperly.

3. Protect Them

When you take off your glasses, don’t place them on a table with the lenses facing down. This may cause scratches when the glass contacts the rough particles on the surface. Instead, lay them upside-down with the lenses perpendicular to the surface. This carries the additional benefit of preventing the heavier upper part of frames from putting pressure on the lenses.

If you don’t wear your glasses for extended periods, store them in a hard-shelled case with a soft lining. Durable containers like these will absorb impacts and prevent scratches and cracks on the lenses. They’ll also protect the frames from warping or bending.
