If you’re planning a kitchen remodeling project, there are a lot of decisions to make, including selecting a layout for the new design. This decision will not only impact the look of your kitchen, but it will also affect its functionality. Learn more about a few popular kitchen layouts to decide which is right for your home.

3 Common Kitchen Layouts

1. L-Shaped

As the name implies, the counters in this design meet at the corner of the room to form an “L.” This leaves the rest of the room open for dining and entertaining, which is ideal if you frequently have guests over for dinner or cocktails.

While the cooking area is efficient for a single cook, two or more may find this layout cramped. L-shaped kitchens also make cleanup easy, as dirty dishes can be sectioned off to the part of the counter near the sink.

2. One-Wall

kitchen remodelingHomes with limited space often have kitchen cabinets and appliances arranged on a single wall. Galley and Pullman kitchens use this design, which maximizes the efficiency of the space.

One-wall kitchens may offer less counter space than other layouts. If this is the case, consider substituting a dining table for an additional island to give you more room to work.

3. Horseshoe

If you have more space to work with, consider a U-shaped layout. This kitchen design offers ample storage space, efficiency, and accessibility. It can be adapted to medium-sized spaces and is ideal for accommodating more than one cook.

In very large kitchens, consider including an island in the middle, as counters and appliances may be more spread out, and you’ll have more ground to cover between different tasks.
