New York regulates what makes a car roadworthy and includes guidelines for how drivers must maintain their auto glass. To avoid going to court for violating these rules, learn more about the laws concerning the quality of your windshield.

How Does New York Regulate Auto Glass?

1. Windshields

Your car or truck is required to have a windshield, so if the auto glass is damaged, popping it out and driving without it won’t be an option. Additionally, your windshield must be made from treated auto glass, which is engineered to withstand significant stress before breaking. When it does break, it also won’t shatter and send shards of glass into the air.

2. Tinting

auto glassIn New York, tinted windows are allowed, but they must meet specific requirements. For example, the top six inches of the window can't be covered in reflective tint, and each side window must allow more than 70% of daylight into the vehicle. While there are no restrictions placed on tinted rear windows, a car with the rear car glass tinted must also have side mirrors on both sides. New York laws also prohibit mirrored or metallic tint from being applied to any car window. Finally, each window must have a decal that verifies it complies with the laws.

3. Obstructions

The front window on your vehicle can't be obstructed by any objects, because this can interfere with the driver's view. Under this regulation, affixing posters and stickers to the glass is prohibited. However, the law specifies that stickers approved by the state can be attached to the windshield. This allows drivers to comply with the requirement to affix registration and inspection stickers to the glass but prohibits other types of stickers.

4. Damage

Under state law, a windshield can't have any cracks, chips, or blemishes that interfere with the driver's field of vision. This law is vague, and it's often up to the police officer to determine whether windshield damage violates the law. For this reason, any damage should be repaired immediately, and more severe cracks should be replaced. Taking care of this as soon as possible can help you avoid getting cited and fined.
