If you can’t drive your car for some time, moving it into vehicle storage is safer than leaving it parked on the street. Storage also frees up space in your home’s garage. Before driving to a facility, use the guide below to ensure the car is ready to roll when you need it.

How to Prepare for Long-Term Vehicle Storage

1. Deal With the Fluids

Motor oil accumulates sediment over time, so change the oil to prevent these contaminants from settling in the engine. Oil thickens in an idle car, so you may need to change it again in six months or so. Your owner’s manual should include how often, if at all, you must replace the oil in a stored car.

Then, top off the fuel to prevent condensation from building up in the tank and causing rust. Add fuel stabilizer to prevent degradation if you’re storing the vehicle for more than 30 days.

2. Clean It

Additionally, clean the interior to prevent odors. Vacuum everything and check the gaps under the seats for personal items.

3. Inflate the Tires

Tires start to deflate under the weight of a car that’s left idle for more than a week. To prevent them from going flat, inflate them to above the manufacturer’s pounds per square inch (psi) recommendations.

If you’re storing the vehicle for more than 30 days, take the wheels off and jack up the car to keep the tires inflated.

4. Disconnect the Battery

The car’s battery recharges when you drive, so it can die if the vehicle is left idle. You can either drive the car once a week every two weeks for 15 minutes, or disconnect the battery cables to prevent the unit from discharging. If you’re using outdoor storage, take the battery home to protect it from the elements.
