One of the most entertaining ways to spend an afternoon or evening with friends is to shoot a few rounds of billiards at a local pool hall.  It is easy enough to learn that beginners can enjoy themselves, yet it offers enough subtle complexities that even accomplished enthusiasts have room to improve. If you are new to the game, below are some of the do’s and don'ts of pool hall etiquette.

Do:

Keep one foot on the ground.

When lining up for a difficult shot, it can sometimes be tempting to sprawl out on the table to reach the cue ball. However, you should always keep at least one foot on the ground, and some pool halls prefer that you keep both feet squarely grounded to avoid putting undue weight on the tables. If you cannot line the shot up without difficulty, feel free to use a bridge stick.

Mark your place in line with coins.

At a public table, you must wait your turn before playing. Instead of standing in line, challengers—who must pay for a round to challenge the winners—place a set of coins on the table's rim. If you decide to challenge, make sure no one else has coins set in front of yours.

Don't:

Set drinks on the pool table.

Pool hallNot only will spilled drinks spoil the game, but they could damage the felt. Treat the tables at a pool hall with the same respect and care you would for your own equipment. They are costly to purchase and repair, so keep your drinks at the bar. Moreover, a glass of beer that’s perched on the side of the table might distract or interfere with other shooters.

Be a distraction.

Avoid distracting other players—especially on purpose—when they're taking a shot. Don't jump around, twirl the pool cue, or shout just as another player lines up in front of the cue ball. Stand several feet back from the table and remain politely still and quiet.
