Plastic is all around you; it’s used in all types of industries. As a result, many different types of plastic are manufactured to fit different applications. While planning for a custom plastic molding project, you will first need to determine which material you want to use to achieve your goals.

5 Material Types Used in Custom Plastic Molding

1. Polyethylene

PE is the most common type of plastic used. It’s manufactured in different densities: low, medium, high, and ultra-high. Low-density is used for grocery bags, while high-density is used in packaging for chemicals or foods. It’s entirely recyclable.

2. Polycarbonate

PC is as transparent as glass but much stronger, making it a heavy-duty option with a lot of flexibility in its design, thanks to custom plastic molding. It’s used for sunglasses, greenhouses, and police riot gear.

3. Polypropylene

PP is relatively strong, resistant to heat, and safe to use with food and beverages. This makes it a popular choice for hot food containers as well as car and machine parts. It will last a long time but is not completely recyclable.

4. Acrylic

5. Polyethylene Terephthalate

PET or PETE is easily recyclable, extremely strong, and chemically resistant to organic materials. It’s almost shatterproof. Because it stops oxygen and water from passing through it, it’s often used to package food and drinks.
