Fallings trees are a common cause of roof and property damage. It’s rare for a healthy tree to suddenly fall, even in major storms. Most deteriorate for months or years before falling. If you watch for the signs that their health is failing, you can arrange a controlled tree removal before the tree falls and prevent extensive and costly property damage and repairs.

How to Tell If It’s Time for Tree Removal

1. Trunk Damage

The trunk of the tree is the structure’s main support system. When it is weakened, the weight of overhead branches can become overwhelming and can snap the tree, especially in high winds.

These issues can rot the trunk over time. Look for cuts, holes, and missing bark. If the injury seems small, consult an arborist to see if the tree needs care or removal. If you notice large gaps or rotten wood, the tree is in danger of falling and needs to be removed.

2. Dead Wood

If you can see fungus growing on the trunk of a tree, even if the rest of the tree looks fine, the trunk is beginning to decompose. Treat this the same as any other type of trunk damage. The roots anchor the tree into the ground and are just as important for keeping it upright as the trunk. When roots are damaged, the tree won’t get the nutrients it needs to thrive. When this happens, you may notice parts of the tree beginning to die.

Look for dying leaves that start at the tips of branches, working their way inward. The tree may even allow branches to die and fall off in an effort to reduce weight and use fewer nutrients. You may also spot fungus growth on the ground around the tree. This means the fungus is feeding on the tree’s roots. Signs of dead wood mean the tree will likely fall without intervention.

3. Leaning

Trees usually lean either because their roots are weakening or because the soil around the roots is eroding. Either way, the tree is quickly losing the support that holds it tall and strong. If you notice the angle of a tree trunk has changed, treat it as an emergency and call for immediate tree removal.
