Gymnastics training provides children with a fun form of exercise and allows them to spend time around like-minded peers. Gymnastics can also help kids overcome their fears, particularly when it comes to the balance beam. Balance beams are usually about 4 feet off the ground, which can be intimidating for kids just starting out. If your child is nervous about this element of gymnastics, learn more about how you can help with this guide.

How to Help Your Child Overcome a Fear of the Balance Beam

1. Develop a Pre-Beam Ritual

Routine can be very reassuring for kids, especially when it comes to intimidating experiences. Work with your child to develop a routine that helps them calm down before they attempt the balance beam.

This can involve doing specific warmup exercises, listening to an empowering song, or approaching the beam from the same direction each time. When your child has a routine to help them relieve stress, they are less likely to feel nervous.

2. Talk With Your Child About Their Fears

GymnasticsGetting to the root of your child’s misgivings can be helpful. Your young gymnast may be worried about falling off the balance beam.

If so, discuss the precautions that will be in place, such as padded flooring and trained supervision. You can also emphasize the role that practice plays in correcting mistakes and improving as a gymnast.

3. Ask for a Spot From the Coaching Staff

Sometimes kids need a little boost of confidence, which is exactly what spotting provides. Spotting is when a coach or another gymnast supports your child during a maneuver, which can alleviate some of the fears about falling. Once the maneuver has been successfully completed with a spotter, your child should try it on their own.
