If you have invested in a new motorcycle, you want to take the right steps to keep your ride in top shape for longer. While purchasing motorcycle insurance is necessary, so is regular maintenance. Below are a few tips on how to properly take care of your new ride.

How to Care for Your Motorcycle

1. Change the Oil & Filter

Your motorcycle engine relies on oil for lubrication and a smooth ride. The owner’s manual will let you know how many miles to go before needing an oil change.

If you choose to change your own oil, warm up the bike for a few minutes so the viscosity is lower and the old oil will drain easily. Turn off the bike, and remove the drain and oil fill plug so the old oil filters out. While in there, remove the oil filter as well. Install a new filter and refill with fresh oil.

2. Check the Tires

Keeping your tires inflated at the correct pressure ensures a safe ride. Underinflated tires create too much friction, which can damage them and lead to flats. Overinflated tires are susceptible to blowouts. Both situations can impact how efficient your motorcycle is with fuel.

Check pressure regularly with a tire pressure gauge, and ensure levels match your owner’s manual recommendations. Also, look at treads and replace tires that are too worn down.

3. Protect the Exterior

4. Clean the Chain

Motorcycle chains need regular cleaning so gunk doesn’t interfere with your ride. The component connects the transmission output shaft to the rear wheel, which makes it turn. To clean this area, elevate the rear wheel while the bike is in neutral so the chain moves easily. With a gentle bristle brush, remove the grime. Purchase chain lube and rotate the rear wheel as you apply it evenly.

5. Maintain the Brakes

Without brakes, your motorcycle puts you and others on the road in danger. Brake fluid is needed for moving the components of your braking system, but it absorbs moisture over time and should be replaced every one to two years. The pads, which cushion the brakes so there is no metal-on-metal friction, will flatten and need replacing after about 50,000 miles.
