Nothing compares to owning a classic car. With your own private piece of automotive history, you can enjoy a functional asset that also acts as a fun conversation starter. However, there are a few factors you should keep in mind when you visit a seller or car show in search of the perfect classic specimen.

How to Shop for a Collector Car

1. Look for Signs of Rust

Rust eats through metal, and unfortunately, it can hide in small places within the engine bay, underneath the car, or around the fenders. If you purchase the car without looking for rust, the body may be less structurally sound than expected, or you could be in for some significant auto body repairs down the road.

When considering a vehicle, use a flashlight to inspect it carefully for rust. Start by going over the outer body of the car, including areas on the inner sides of doors, bumpers, and wheel wells. Inspect rocker panels, floors, exhaust systems, and even the suspension. Check the paint job to see if there’s bubbled or uneven paint, which could indicate that the car was painted before metalwork was finished.

If rust is present, talk with the seller about lowering the price to cover the repairs. If possible, speak with an auto body professional about the estimated costs of restoration before you seriously think about the transaction.

2. Invest in a Professional Inspection

While classic cars are obviously used and will have some wear and tear, ask them to check for serious issues that may require complex or expensive work.

3. Consider Insurance Costs

Insuring a classic car can be tricky, especially since parts may be quite difficult to find and the vehicle will lack many of the safety features of newer cars. Additionally, if you drive it frequently or for long distances, premiums may be high for a rare vehicle. Before purchasing any classic car, learn as much as you can about it and call an agent to talk about pricing.
