A vehicle can run for decades and hundreds of thousands of miles with proper care. Some of the most important maintenance tasks are not difficult or expensive, and you or your auto mechanic can often complete them in a matter of minutes. Here are a few tasks that will help your car last as long as possible.

3 Easy Ways to Maintain Your Car

1. Change the Oil

Engine oil lubricates moving parts and helps dissipate heat. It can’t do that efficiently if it’s old, dirty, or decomposing.

Replace the oil every three months or 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Check your owner's manual to see what kind of oil the manufacturer recommends for the vehicle.

When you have the oil changed, ask your auto mechanic to check the levels of other vital fluids and inspect belts and hoses for cracks and wear.

2. Keep Tires Inflated Properly

auto mechanic in Honolulu, HIOverinflated tires are more likely to blow out, while underinflated tires make handling sluggish, wear out more quickly than they should, and reduce fuel economy.  Check your tire pressure at every refueling stop or at least once a month. You can find the manufacturer-recommended pressure in the owner's manual or on the inside edge of the driver's door.

3. Replace Windshield Wipers

Your ability to see the road while driving is essential for safety. Replace the windshield wipers once or twice a year or as soon as you notice streaking or visibility issues. As they age, their rubber loses flexibility and can start to chatter, squeak, skip, or smear the rain instead of wiping it away completely.
