Each dog breed is unique, and some are genetically predisposed to experience skin conditions. As you decide on which breed you will bring into your family, you should know what to look out for. If you know what conditions your dog is predisposed to, you can help prevent or provide appropriate treatment through pet dermatology.

3 Breeds That Are Predisposed to Skin Conditions

1. Standard Poodles

The genetic condition granulomatous sebaceous adenitis runs among poodles. This condition affects the oil glands, resulting in clogged skin pores that cause their hair to fall out. You can help this condition by keeping their skin clean with frequent baths and grooming. A diet high in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin A can also help.

2. Shar-Peis

pet dermatologyThe Chinese Shar-Pei is a short-haired dog with skin that folds over itself. Unfortunately, the short, prickly strands of hair can poke the skin as it folds over itself, which causes irritation. They're also more susceptible to allergies as a result of their short coat since longer fur coats prevent pollen and allergens from touching the skin. Diligent grooming and using a medicated shampoo recommended by your pet dermatology team can help prevent a reaction.

3. Bulldogs

The American bulldog has a short coat and skin folds, much like the Shar-Pei. They are also predisposed to have hypersensitivities, either through environmental factors that touch the skin, such as pollen or dust particles, or through their diet, which should have plenty of healthy fats and vitamin D3.

Look out for skin that is red and scaly, especially along the belly and in the armpits. If you notice scratching or an infection between the paw pads, you can conduct genetic testing to find out what your dog is sensitive to and determine a treatment accordingly.
