A kitchen remodel provides two important qualities: aesthetic appeal and improved functionality. Both of these elements are ideal during the holidays when you're both inviting people into your home and cooking large, multi-course meals. Such a big project takes time, however, so the end of summer is the right time to get started. Here's a closer look at the timeline you can expect.

Finding a Contractor

The skills, experience, and expertise provided by a contractor are essential to successful home remodeling. Aside from handling the heavy lifting, they also take care of the less fun aspects of the project, like budgeting, filing for permits, and staying on top of orders.

If you choose the right team, they’ll also guide you through the interior design process to help you bring your ideas to life. This step takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

Ordering Products

kitchen remodelingOnce the plan is finalized, all the elements need to be ordered in the correct size, style, and color. If you want to make any changes, this is the time to avoid delays closer to the holiday season. As such, be sure to double-check your design before your contractor places the order.

While it's the most straightforward aspect of the kitchen remodel, it's also the most time-consuming since you're at the mercy of the manufacturers. Potential wait times vary by product. For example, cabinets typically need to be ordered by September to ensure arrival and installation by Thanksgiving. Countertops, on the other hand, take between one to four weeks to fabricate. Public health crises may also increase production time in certain areas.

Demolition

The process of removing current fixtures, flooring, and cabinetry usually only takes a few days. However, if you're making structural changes, such as taking out a wall or widening the door, more time is needed. You also need to allot a few days for moving or installing new utility lines, if applicable. The latter is only an issue if you're changing the layout.

Installation & Painting

After breaking it all apart, it's time to put it all back together again in a new and aesthetically pleasing manner. First, the flooring, cabinetry, backsplash, lighting, and countertops need to be installed; this may take one to two weeks depending on the materials chosen. Next, you need two to three days for painting and dry time, followed by a day or two for appliance installation and final touches, such as trim and caulking.
