Area rugs add color, texture, and visual interest to rooms. They’re meant to clearly define living spaces, pulling together furniture to create cohesion. If you’re exploring rug options for a living room, use the guide below to pick the right products.

How to Measure the Space

First, measure the dimensions from wall to wall. An area rug should be large enough to encompass all of the furniture, or at least fit under the front legs of couches and chairs.

As a rule of thumb, the chosen tapestry should leave around 18 inches of bare floor around its perimeter. In small homes, 8 inches is sufficient. However, if you want to protect the flooring from foot traffic or pets, pick an option that covers nearly the entire square footage.

Apply masking tape to the floor to create an outline of where you want the rug, adjusting it until you find the perfect design. Measure the length and depth of the masked area.

Where to Place Area Rugs in the Living Room

area rugsIf the living room is part of an open floor plan, use one rug for each space. Pick options that match, such as products in similar patterns.

Place one in the middle of the living room with the legs of the sofa over the edge. The coffee table should be roughly in the center. Place another matching rug in the dining room with the table centered over it. Dining chairs should sit on the surface while pushed in and pulled out so the legs don’t catch on the edges. This might require tapestry that’s 24 to 36 inches wider than the table.
