When your obstetrician tells you that you’re having twins, it is often exciting news. It can also be slightly stressful as you adjust your plans to accommodate two babies instead of one. Your body is also likely to respond slightly differently when cradling more than one child, meaning you should take some precautions during pregnancy. If you’ve recently received this announcement, here’s what you need to know.

What to Expect If You’re Pregnant With Twins

1. More OB-GYN Appointments

Obstetricians want to see women who are having twins more frequently. The extra appointments are necessary for carefully monitoring whether each baby is receiving equal amounts of nutrients and blood from the mother. Women having twins will typically be checked monthly and then every week starting around 30 weeks. With having more appointments, make sure to keep a notebook handy filled with any questions you have for your physician.

2. C-Section Delivery Likely

obstetricianIdeally, babies that are about to be born will be oriented head-down, which is the safest position for delivery. If they are in any other position, they are considered “breech.” Since twins often have to contort themselves around one another, there is an increased risk of one of the twins being breech, which often prompts a Cesarean section. While women can have a vaginal delivery, the final decision is largely based on ultrasound data leading up to delivery day. In addition, twins are more likely to be born early.

3. Unique Nutrition & Vitamin Changes

On average, mothers will need several hundred more calories added to their daily diet if they are supporting more than one baby. Obstetricians generally advise their patients to eat smaller meals throughout the day as opposed to the traditional breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This adjustment can help decrease heartburn and nausea. In addition to taking prenatal vitamins, women having twins may need additional folic acid to help provide extra iron to their growing little ones.
