Whether you’re planning a wedding reception or a birthday party, no event is complete without food! Catering will ensure your guests get delicious food without you having to put in all the work. However, if you plan to hold your event outdoors, you’ll need to consider a few extra factors. Here are some items you’ll want to discuss with your caterer.

How to Plan for Outdoor Catering

1. Know the Space

Whenever possible, check out the venue before making catering plans. Some venues already have tables and chairs on-site. Some have enclosed areas that would be better suited for serving food. Issues with terrain or a lack of electrical hookups could make food setup challenging. Examine the space, so you can determine the best place for serving food.

catering2. Protect the Food

For outdoor events, you need to protect the food from both weather and pests. Have plenty of ice to keep chilled items at a safe temperature. Ask your caterer about providing lids to keep bugs away from the food. Bug zappers may also be needed, depending on the location.

3. Have a Backup Plan

You never know when inclement weather might strike. Come up with a backup plan for where you will hold the event and serve the food if it rains on the day of your event.

To protect the food and catering equipment, it’s best to have a covered area, such as a rented canopy tent, ready. It can also provide much-needed shade for the serving area during warm, sunny weather.
