Sewage backups in the home are not only inconvenient and unpleasant, but they’re also unhealthy. Raw sewage contains bacteria and other contaminants that can cause illness, so the problem must be addressed by a plumber immediately. Here are some causes of backups so that you can take steps to prevent them.

What Are Some Reasons for Sewage Backups?

1. Tree Roots

Since sewer lines contain moisture, tree roots often infiltrate them and cause major clogs. If you’re planting a new tree in your yard, make sure it’s at least 20 feet away from sewer lines. For existing trees, have a plumber inspect the pipes to determine if any damage has occurred.

2. Flushing the Wrong Items

plumberDon’t be fooled by “flushable” wipes, as they’re notorious for causing clogs deep within home plumbing systems. Also, be wary of flushing cat litter, paper towels, tissues, and anything else that isn’t toilet paper. These items won’t break down on their own, which increases the risk of a sewage backup.

3. Excess Rainfall

Heavy rain can cause debris to accumulate within outdoor drains. This debris can make its way down into the sewer line and subsequently cause clogs.

Debris can also result in broken or damaged pipes, which may need to be replaced if the damage is too severe. While there’s little you can do about the weather, routine drain clearing is an essential part of preventative maintenance to keep your home plumbing system intact.
