Moving houses can be an exciting opportunity. But the transition isn’t always easy, particularly when you have multiple appliances and furniture pieces to transport. Fortunately, preparation and help from professional movers can make the process less of a hassle. Here are four major appliance moving tips

A Guide to Moving Household Appliances

1. Stove

Clean the stove interior thoroughly to remove food bits and eliminate the risk of scratching or pest infestation during moving or storage. Remove the racks from inside the stove or securely fasten them to keep them from moving.

If it’s a gas appliance, turn off the fuel before you disconnect the line. These components can be extremely hazardous, so if you’re unsure how to handle the fuel line safely, call your gas company or moving company for assistance. Tape down the knobs and doors to keep them in place.

2. Washer & Dryer

Clean your washing machine with a disinfectant solution to ensure it’s free of bacteria and mildew. Remove all hoses to eliminate the risk of water damage. Wrap the connector ends in fabric and pack these tubes in a box or inside the washer cavity for safekeeping.

An unsecured drum could cause significant damage or pose a safety risk, so it’s essential to make sure it is done correctly.

3. Refrigerator

Unplug the refrigerator at least 24 hours before you plan to move it. Disconnect the ice maker and ensure the water line is drained completely.  Clean out the fridge and freezer and remove all food items. When the freezer has defrosted, ensure it is dry. Take out all removable parts, including shelves and drawers, and pack them in a box. You can also secure them inside to keep them from shifting during the move.

4. Dishwasher

Disconnect and drain the hoses. This will help prevent water damage. If possible, leave the dishwasher open for a few days before the move to dry it out thoroughly and prevent mold and mildew growth. Secure the interior racks or remove them during the move. Make sure the dishwasher door is securely closed before transporting it.
