It can be a confusing sight to see your cat consistently finding their way to your shoes and even taking them away. It’s actually normal behavior — your cat doesn’t usually need to see the veterinarian for this habit. Here’s a guide to why it’s happening and what you can do about it.

Why Are My Cats Constantly Gravitating to My Shoes?

Cats are known for their enhanced sense of smell, which is much stronger than that of humans. Because shoes come into contact with many surfaces, and because feet generate sweat as humans walk, shoes collect a large number of trace smells.

Since cats are highly sensitive to smell, they’re naturally drawn to shoes. It’s possible they’re picking up on the pheromones of a different cat and simply investigating it. They may even be marking their territory.

veterinarianAnother possibility is that cats may derive comfort from a scented remnant of you when you’re not at home. Or even if you are around, that smell can bring them relief if they’re feeling stressed.

How Can I Stop Them From Messing With My Shoes?

The best solution is to stow your shoes where your cat can’t access them. One idea is to put them in a closet that closes, though that means you’d have to bring them there when you got home. It may be more convenient to invest in a small plastic bin or organizer by the front door.

Since it would seal, the cats wouldn’t be able to get to it. One other option is to place the shoes outside on the deck of a house or in the hallway outside an apartment.

Before you try to simply put the shoes on a shelf, remember that cats are impressive climbers! It’s worth noting that cats showing interest in shoes is not necessarily a negative aspect. It’s only a problem if it bothers you in some way or if they’ve started chewing or hiding them.
