Vinyl composition tile (VCT) is a popular flooring material used in commercial and high-traffic locations. Its durability and ease of maintenance make it a cost-effective option for locations that don’t want to replace their flooring for one or more decades. However, like all materials, if you want it to reach old age, some upkeep is required.

How to Maintain Your VCT Flooring

1. Add Mats to Entryways

Minimizing the amount of dirt and moisture tracked onto your flooring is the first step in prolonging its life. Place Berber or rubber scrubber mats at both the foyer and exterior points of your entrance to force debris off of your customer's shoes and soak up any water before it can be tracked across your flooring. However, make sure to vacuum these rugs at the end of every night and replace them when they start to look worn.

2. Sweep & Mop Regularly

flooringDuring lulls in the business day and when it’s over, use a microfiber dust mop to pick up dust, dirt, and other particles off the floor before they can cause scratches or dulling. Depending on your level of foot traffic, you’ll also want to clean with a damp mop and a nonabrasive cleaner at least twice a week to remove any grime and shoe prints.

3. Burnish Weekly

Keeping your floors shiny helps them look like new to customers, giving the impression that your facility is clean and well maintained. Burnishing uses a high-speed floor scrubber to pick up debris while restoring the flooring’s glossy and smooth appearance. It’s a similar process to buffing, but a burnisher makes more revolutions per minute, allowing it to cover the span of your store much faster and produce a better-looking shine.
