Around 10% of seniors over 65 experience abuse. Even worse, nearly 8% of all reported nursing home abuse is sexual. For that reason, families need to know the signs so that they can spot a problem sooner rather than later. Here's a brief overview of what to look for.

How to Identify Sexual Abuse in Nursing Homes

1. STD Diagnosis

The rate of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) is lowest among adults age 65 and older. Additionally, seniors living in medical care facilities often deal with physical weakness or mental decline.

These traits also attract sexual predators because your loved one may be less likely to be able to fight back or report the nursing home abuse. For these reasons, testing positive for an STD should be viewed as a red flag.

2. Unexplained Genitalia Injuries

They can occur in the form of bruises as well as scrapes and cuts. The damage may also make it challenging to move around, so look for signs of discomfort or grimaces when your loved one is walking or switching positions.

3. Mood Changes

While the act is physical, the most devastating consequences of elder abuse are often mental. The trauma leaves psychological scars that often manifest in emotional instability, including increased agitation, depression-like symptoms, and anxiety.

Extreme mood swings are also common among nursing home neglect and abuse victims. In some cases, the changes may only be present when a certain caregiver or staff member is nearby or interacting with the patient.
