Whether you’re now working from home or juggling new responsibilities with COVID-19 and disruption to everyday life, regular exercise may have fallen by the wayside. Stress could be a factor, but it could just also be a lack of motivation. The encouraging news is there are realistic ways to get back into the swing of working out if you haven’t been physically active in a while. Personal trainers offer the following suggestions to make it happen and have fun doing so.

How to Get Back to Working Out

1. Take Baby Steps at First

While it may be tempting to jump right in with a full-on workout each day, the level of intensity can be draining. You’re likely to push yourself too fast. Instead, commit to easing into it with lighter intensity and without overcommitting yourself.

Don’t worry about how long it will take, how much you need to do. Taking baby steps could lessen any overwhelming feelings.  Remember, a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.

2. Select the right exercise

Often times we’re taught that you should go out and walk, go to the pool, get on the elliptical and bike. Some easy aerobic (cardio) activity can be beneficial, but it is not enough stimulus to make the changes you are looking for.  And because you won’t see results, it will be much harder to stick to the routine, and you’ll need to do a lot more of it to see results, putting you at risk for injury.

Instead, be sure the routine combines the right amount of mobility exercises to get the body functioning the way it should, the right endurance exercises to increase your stamina, and effective resistance training to improve your body’s strength and cardiovascular health.   The resistance training should include the latest technology to be sure that it is safe and effective, and should be guided by a coach to be sure it is done safely.

By selecting the right form of exercise, you’ll see results much sooner, and doing far less compared to conventional exercise, and it will be something you can stick with.

3. Find someone to help keep you on track

4. Don’t Be Hard on Yourself

If you start off strong but miss a few days, be easy on yourself.  In your personalized program, you’ll want to be sure that you have proper rest days to give muscles a chance to adjust and recover from regular exercise. Those days are important for restoration. Pick up where you left off and you’ll be proud that you resumed working out.
