A durable metal roof provides some of the best overhead protection for your home and requires very little maintenance. Roofing sheets can last up to 70 years with proper care, and establishing a routine is easy. Below are easy-to-use tips to keep your roof strong.

How Can You Take Care of Your Metal Roof?

1. Inspect Sheets, Sealants & Fasteners

Yearly roofing inspections can catch any problems early. Walk carefully and closely check the seams around skylights, chimneys, and between panels. Apply a new sealant layer if the silicone or other material is flaking to prevent leaks. Check that all the panels and flashing are secure. You’ll need to tighten the screws on those that were jostled loose by high winds. Make sure that the washers and fasteners between the panels haven’t deteriorated from UV rays or water exposure. Replace any as needed to maintain a watertight seal.

2. Clear the Gutters & Debris

metal-roof-dothanClogged gutters and standing debris won’t fully remove water from your metal roof. Long-term moisture exposure will wear down the water-resistant additive on the panels and eventually lead to rusting. This makes your roof less durable and will also cut into its lifespan. Clear gutters at the end of each season and use a power washer to blast away leaves, dirt, and other debris on the roof’s surface.

3. Trim Tree Branches

Overhanging branches can scrape the sealant layer from panels during high winds. Larger branches may also draw panels loose and lead to water leaks. An arborist can help you trim back branches each spring so that they’re at least 6 inches from the roof. Cutting branches back further will reduce the amount of foliage deposited in your gutters.
