The way your dog sleeps says a lot about how they’re feeling and their health. Paying attention to their normal sleeping positions allows you to notice behavioral changes early on. This way, you can make corrections to help your dog get more comfortable or make an appointment with your veterinarian to see if it could be something more serious.

What Your Dog’s Sleeping Position Means

1. Side & Back Sleeper

When a dog leaves their underside exposed, it means they feel safe in their surroundings. If your pup frequently sleeps on their side or on their back with their legs extended out or into the air, it means they are comfortable and relaxed around you and in their environment.

It’s normal for dogs to alter this position when someone new is around or when they are napping in a strange location. Also, when overheated and trying to cool down, dogs will sleep in similar positions. However, if their paws are tucked close to their chest, they may feel like they need to be more defensive right now.

2. Stomach Sleeper

Covering the stomach is not always a sign of mistrust. Puppies frequently sleep in a sprawled leg, stomach-down position. This is usually a sign of a very energetic furball trying to cool off their underside by absorbing the cool surface temperatures.

veterinarianIt’s also a popular position for brachycephalic breeds — dogs with short skulls and snouts like bulldogs, Pugs, and Pekingese — as it helps them breathe easier. Many times, dogs will move from this relaxed position to a more comfortable one with their head placed on their front paws.

If they fall into a deeper sleep, it’s normal for them to transition into a side-sleeping position. However, if they remain on their stomach with their paws tucked inward and tight, it could be a sign that they are on edge or feeling timid. If this behavior continues, check with your veterinarian to see if there’s anything you can do to make them feel more comfortable.

3. Curled Sleeper

Dogs naturally move their body while sleeping to ward off threats and to stay warm. If your pup likes to sleep in a curled-ball position, they are either trying to make themselves small to feel less vulnerable or to regulate their body temperature.

If you suspect your dog is having a hard time staying warm, experiment with different bedding materials that allow them to get more comfortable and sleep better.
