The toilet is one of the most important fixtures in any home, so proper maintenance is a must. Even though they’re fairly durable, toilets do periodically need to be replaced. For new homeowners who want to be proactive about plumbing repairs and replace your commode before it fully stops working, here are some things to look out for.

When Do You Need Plumbing Repairs?

1. Leaking

Leaks around your toilet can cause serious water damage to your bathroom floor and walls. If you notice small puddles of water, try to determine where they’re coming from. If it’s a line running to the toilet, you may just be able to replace that part or tighten the connections. However, if it’s coming from the tank itself, it may be cracked and will need to be replaced.

2. Clogging

However, if the problem arises frequently, like once per week or more, it’s likely worthwhile to simply replace the whole fixture. Newer toilets tend to have better flush technology and are better equipped to help you avoid this problem.

3. Hissing

Toilets include several valves that connect the tank to the bowl. If one or more of these valves is faulty, air may sneak through and create a hissing sound. It’s possible that just one valve needs to be replaced. However, this may also be a sign that your toilet is simply old, and the interior parts are worn down. If you end up replacing several interior parts, it’s likely worthwhile to simply replace the whole toilet.
