When grass isn't getting the nutrients it needs, it may become brown or patchy—or die altogether. Fertilization provides plants with the valuable food they need to grow green, lush, and strong. Learn about the most common fertilizer ingredients and signs that your lawn is missing these vital nutrients.

Nitrogen

Nitrogen is a building block of chlorophyll, the pigment that gives grass its green color. It's also used to activate the production of plant enzymes and amino acids, allowing seedlings to grow and reproduce.

You can tell your lawn is lacking nitrogen if it turns yellow. Slower than usual growth may also indicate a lack of this nutrient. If you have to mow less frequently, your lawn might need more nitrogen.

Phosphorous

fertilizationPlants rely on their roots to soak up oxygen, nutrients, and water from the earth. Phosphorous promotes a strong, dense root network, as plants convert it to sugars and starches used to grow roots.

Phosphorous is also used in photosynthesis, the process through which plants distribute nutrients throughout their cells. Grass that isn't getting enough phosphorous may turn dark green and become patchy, growing fewer and smaller blades.

Potassium

Potassium also supports photosynthesis by activating the enzymes grass needs to build proteins and regulate water use. Without sufficient potassium, the grass is unable to fight off pests and disease effectively.

Early signs of potassium deficiency include leaves that curl at the sides or develop spots. Grass blades may also exhibit a scorched look, turning yellowish-brown at the edges.
