Your dryer is one of the major appliances in your home because it offers the most convenient and fastest way to dry clothes. While there are many sizes, shapes, and features available, all these styles can be divided into three main types based on the major systems inside them. Being aware of the types available can help you choose the one with the right features for you while knowing what type you have can help you describe any issue to a dryer repair technician. Here’s what you need to know about each one.

What Kinds of Dryers Are Available?

1. Washer Dryer Combination

This type of device combines two major appliances: a washing machine and a condenser dryer. It’s ideal for saving space in small apartments and shared homes where there may not be space for two major appliances. The dry cycle works the same way as in a standard condenser dryer, and the water drains the same way that the water from the wash cycle does. The dry cycle can be slower than the dry cycle a standard dryer, but the convenience of having two devices in one often makes up for it.

2. Vented

Major AppliancesThis type of dryer produces hot air, which is pushed into the drum of the dryer. As the drum spins, the hot air flows through the clothes, evaporating the moisture in them and carrying it out through a vent. This vent leads outside the home so that the moisture from the clothes can dissipate into the environment. This is usually the most affordable type of dryer, but the vent can require extra maintenance and cleaning to keep it from getting clogged with lint.

3. Condenser & Heat Pump Condenser

A condenser dryer is designed to work without a vent. Instead of sending air directly from the drum to the vent, the air is cooled, so the moisture condenses out of it. A drip pan collects the water and disposes of it through a drain, while the remaining air is released into the home. The air is still slightly more humid than the surroundings, which can cause water damage if the area isn’t ventilated, so some heat pump condenser dryers use a closed system instead. The used air has the moisture condensed out of it, and then the same air is reheated using a heat pump and cycled back into the drum to continue drying the clothes. Condenser and heat pump condenser dryers are more expensive than vented ones, but they can be used when there is no outside vent available.
