If you’re looking for a new garage door for your home, you might feel overwhelmed by the various options. A door's style tells you more than just what it looks like—it can also determine how that door opens and closes. Below, learn about common styles of garage doors.

3 Styles to Consider for Garage Door Installation

1. Hinged

Just like any other door throughout your home, a garage door can open on hinges. They’re usually arranged as a very large set of double doors, opening from the center and swinging outward to either side. This type of door needs plenty of open space in front of the garage. There are many attractive hinged options with a classic, elegant feel, so if you don’t like the modern look of other garage doors, this is the perfect option. Also, you can open one side at a time if needed.

2. Tilt-Up

Garage DoorThis type of door is made of one large panel that swings upward to open. It can be hinged at the top so that it swings directly outward. It can also be attached to jointed arms at the sides so that when it opens, it is pulled partly into the garage, lying mostly against the garage ceiling with only a small amount protruding. The first tilt-up canopy type requires space in front of the garage but provides extra rain protection when open. The up-and-over style saves outdoor space but requires ceiling space inside.

3. Sectional & Roll-Up

Both of these styles rely on long, narrow horizontal panels that roll up along a curved track to open. They take up the least amount of space when opening. Sectional garage doors are made of a few wider panels, while roll-up doors are made of many narrow slats. If you want to save ceiling space, there are also sectional doors that roll to the side of the garage instead of the ceiling when open. All of these styles are modern, low-maintenance, and convenient to open and close.
