Moving into a new apartment is an exciting and busy time, so it’s easy for some responsibilities to go overlooked. An important task on the moving list should be to change your address as soon as possible. Notify the correct parties to avoid missed bills and other communication issues. Here's how to get started.

6 Steps for Changing Home Addresses

1. Verify the Address

Before you move in, call or stop by the apartment office and verify the new mailing address. The management team should be willing to print or email those details upon request to have it for your records.

2. Notify the Post Office

Start by informing the United States Postal Service of the new address, which can be done either online or in person. This helps them know to reroute letters and packages for all or only selected individuals at your specified former address.

3. Notify Your Employer

apartmentYour employer’s human resources officer or employee online portal should be updated with the new address as soon as possible. It's important for tax reporting and insurance purposes that your pay stubs, tax forms, and benefits information reflect the current address.

4. Inform the DMV

Alaska requires residents to notify the Department of Motor Vehicles of a change of address within 30 days of moving. Change of address forms are available online or at DMV offices around the state. Drivers must have their current address on file, even if it isn’t reflected on their current vehicle registrations and driver's licenses. To obtain a new license showing your new address, apply for a duplicate.

5. Tell the Financial Institutions

When borrowing money from creditors, like loan companies, you sign a contract agreeing to notify them of a new home address. Most banks, credit card companies, and loan institutions allow you to make these changes online.

6. Contact Utility Companies

If you have an account with a power, water, phone, or cable company, notify them of the changed address as soon as possible to avoid disruption of services at the new apartment. It’s recommended to schedule the changeover at least two weeks in advance.
