The summer season is finally in full swing, and if you’re like most people, you’re probably looking for a way to cool off. During this time, you also need to consider how hot it is for your dog. Keeping your pup nice and cool will ensure they remain healthy and comfortable this season, so try some of the helpful, veterinarian-approved tricks below.

What Veterinarians Recommend to Help Your Dog Cool Off

1. Make Them a Cold Drink

Just like people, dogs need to stay adequately hydrated when it gets hot out. On a normal day, refilling your pup’s drinking bowl once every two hours should suffice. However, when temperatures hit 80 degrees or higher, increase that schedule to once an hour or more as needed (depending on how often your animal drinks).

You can fill the bowl with ice cubes to make their water supply extra refreshing and help them stay cool. When you take them on walks, bring a bottle with you and let them drink from it if they start panting or seem overheated.

2. Keep Up With Their Grooming

veterinarianIf your dog’s fur is left to grow untamed, it adds extra weight on top of their skin. This is not only uncomfortable, but it can also decrease their ability to cool off, increasing their risk of overheating. Brush their fur at least once a week to ensure their undercoat has adequate airflow.

3. Get Them a Kiddie Pool

If you’ve ever jumped into a cold pool on a hot, summer day, you know how instantly refreshing it can be. The same experience can be achieved for your pup by buying them a kiddie pool. Use a hose to fill it up about halfway and let your dog lay out for a bit to cool off.
