When you’re shopping for a new car, there are a host of factors to consider. Some of the most common include price, color, size, and safety features. But one element you shouldn’t overlook is the chassis. The following guide provides an overview of what this component is and the different types available, so you can visit your dealer well educated and ready to start shopping.

What Is a Chassis?

The chassis refers to the sturdy metal framework on which the rest of the car is built. Typically, the framework includes the transmission, engine, brakes, suspension, tires, and axels. It includes all of these components to ensure the structure is strong and sturdy enough to support the full weight of the vehicle.

What Are the Different Types?

new carVehicles are typically available in two different types of chassis: a body-on-frame and a unibody. With the former, the structure is comprised of a ladder-like frame with two bars running parallel to one another, with supporting beams connecting them. The body of the car is then placed on top of this structure. Usually, this type of chassis is used with large vehicles like trucks and SUVs.

The primary advantage is that they are easy to repair and are highly durable in the event of a collision. However, it’s worth noting that the rigid nature of the chassis makes it more difficult to drive.

In a unibody chassis, the frame is attached to the vehicle’s body, rather than working as a support system. In this case, both elements work together to comprise a single structure. This type of chassis is typically used in smaller cars, such as sedans, hatchbacks, and coupes.

The primary benefit of this type is that it’s lightweight, making it easier to manage fuel economy. However, in the event your vehicle needs body repairs, the process will be more difficult since both elements are attached to one another.
