When it comes to lawn care, the work never fully ends. Although the end of autumn offers a bit of a reprieve from the constant mowing and watering, there are still a few maintenance tasks that must be done before winter fully arrives. Winterizing your landscaping not only protects it from freezing temperatures but also makes maintenance easier for you come springtime. Here are some essential steps to take.

3 Lawn Care Steps to Prepare for Winter

1. Wrap Shrubs & Hedges

To guard against strong winds and freezing temperatures, wrap some mesh or a breathable cloth around any shrubs and hedges. The more delicate and thin the branches are, the more they need this barrier. If you want something inexpensive, you can use burlap. But if you want something more incognito, you can get black or green garden netting.

2. Rake Up Leaves & Acorns

Although you can add them to your green waste bin, if you compost, these leaves are a great "dry" material to have on hand. Don't put them all in at once; bag up the leaves and keep them in a dry spot. Only add them when your compost needs it.

As for acorns, try to clean them up as well. By the time spring arrives, they may end up taking root and sprouting. Even if they don't, they can still leave the surface of the lawn bumpy and uneven.

3. Protect Your Plants from Deer

Once the neighborhood trees and shrubs lose their leaves and fruit, it becomes more difficult for the deer in the area to eat. Even if your plants are mostly sparse, if there's any vegetation left, they'll still approach your lawn and do some damage. Invest in natural deer repellent, fortify or set up fences on the perimeter, and use deer netting around any berries or vegetables in your property.
