Tree pruning involves removing branches and limbs to support the tree's health and improve its overall appearance. The right techniques can ensure a long and robust lifespan for your trees, so be sure to follow these do's and don'ts.

Do:

Prune at different times of year for different purposes.

Schedule your tree pruning based on the needs of your trees. For instance, prune in the winter to foster new growth in the spring, but prune in the summer to hinder the growth of problem branches. If you need to prune in the spring, wait until all the blossoms of flowering trees have fully opened so you don't jeopardize their growth. Pruning in the fall should be reserved for removing problem branches, as anything else may result in longer healing times for the tree.

Remove dead or weakened branches.

tree pruningDead, damaged, or otherwise weakened branches should be pruned as soon as possible, especially if they're overhanging your home, vehicle, or powerline. Weakened branches can sap needed nutrients from the rest of the tree and impede its development, and they can also destabilize the tree and present a safety hazard.

Don't:

Cut more than 25% of a tree's crown.

The crown consists of the tree's uppermost branches and leaves. It's here that most of the tree's food is produced, so removing more than 25% of the crown is a serious threat to the tree's health and longevity.

Ignore safety.

Safety should be your primary concern during tree pruning. If you're not sure how to do it safely and effectively, or you can't comfortably reach the portions of the tree that need pruning, contact a professional. Also, wear a hardhat, work gloves, and other safety gear at all times, and be sure the yard is clear of people, vehicles, lawn furniture, and decorations. Finally, never prune a tree within 10 feet of a powerline or transformer.
