Packing for a move is stressful, but it can be done in a less chaotic way if you plan ahead. It’s best to create a thorough plan before the moving company arrives. To streamline the packing and moving process, follow the do’s and don’ts below.

Do:

Buy the right supplies.

Take inventory of your belongings and decide what supplies you’ll need to pack them up. Figure out the number of big and small boxes, and buy extra for good measure.

Make sure to buy packing peanuts or bubble wrap to keep your fragile items, such as dishes and holiday decorations, safe during the move. Additionally, pick up stickers to color code your boxes to denote what room they belong in, as well as permanent markers and packing tape.

Consider donating or throwing items away.

moving companyIt’s tempting to simply throw everything in boxes and promise yourself you’ll go through it all when you move into your new place. However, this means you’ll be moving items you don’t even want, which will require more boxes and make moving take more time.

Create piles of items that you want to donate or throw away so you don’t have to bring them with you. Make sure you schedule a trip to the donation center before your move so you have a place to put items you plan to donate.

Don’t:

Delay packing until the last minute.

Many people underestimate the amount of time they’ll need to pack up their belongings. If you wait until a couple of days or even the night before, you’re setting yourself up for disaster.

If you allow yourself several weeks, you’ll be able to sort items out more carefully and make the unpacking process much easier. Plan to pack your items up at least two weeks before the moving company arrives.

Pack essential items.

It’s crucial to keep personal care items, such as hygienic and bathroom essentials, on-hand during the move. This way, you don’t have to purchase additional items or dig through boxes.

To make the process easier, keep a set of pajamas and day clothes on-hand, as well as one pot and one pan in the kitchen. This will encourage you to continue to cook during the move rather than purchase meals each day.
