One of the most common complaints that auto repair shops receive is that one or more of a vehicle's dashboard lights are glowing. For instance, the traction control light—which looks like a swerving vehicle or the end-view of a tire—indicates that the computer system notices an issue with the vehicle's stability and steering performance. Below are some of the key reasons this light will illuminate.

Why Does a Traction Control Light Come on?

1. Failing Wheel Speed Sensors

Most traction control systems (TCS) use a sensor near each wheel that monitors wheel speed. When a loss of traction causes a tire to spin rapidly, the sensor notices and the computer engages the TCS to compensate. However, a bad sensor can cause the dashboard light to illuminate, even when there are no traction problems. This may also cause your anti-lock braking system (ABS) lights to come on, as well.

2. Inclement Driving Conditions

If possible, pull to the side of the road and wait until conditions improve. If this is not feasible, drive slowly and carefully through the environmental issues. Make sure to leave more space between any cars in front of you to help prevent an accident.

3. Manual Override

Many vehicles—particularly sports cars—have a switch that lets you turn off the traction control system. This allows you to have more control over the vehicle and dislodge it if you get stuck in snow or mud. If you accidentally press the button, the TCS light will illuminate until you deactivate the override. Alternatively, the traction control will reactivate when you turn off and restart the car.
