When temperatures drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the water in your home’s plumbing system may freeze. Since water expands when it turns into ice, this could wind up cracking or busting open your pipes. As soon as you notice a leak, shut off your water and call a plumber right away to limit water damage. You should also take proactive steps, such as those in the guide below.

How Do You Stop Your Pipes From Freezing?

1. Insulate

Insulation helps to keep the water in your pipes at a consistent temperature. This is especially important for any plumbing that is near exterior walls that may grow cold in the winter. Purchase fittings at a home improvement store or talk to your plumber about wrapping your pipes for you.

2. Open Cabinets

Your home’s furnace can help keep your plumbing above freezing temperature. However, pipes are often located behind closed doors—such as inside cabinets under your sinks. On especially cold days, open those areas up so heat can reach your pipes easily.

3. Let Faucets Drip

plumberWhen you turn off your water, some droplets remain in the system. These eventually freeze, forming an ice clog that liquid water will have a hard time getting past when you turn your faucets on again. The pressure eventually leads to pipes bursting. However, if the water is constantly moving, that pressure isn’t as likely to build. On very cold days, allow one of your faucets to drip so that water continues to circulate.

4. Keep the Heat Running

If you’re going away for an extended period, you might be tempted to shut off the heat to save money. However, this can dramatically increase the chances of frozen pipes. If you want to lower your energy bills, turn down the temperature by a few degrees instead.
