With frequent, heavy rains, Hawaii’s winter puts your roofing at risk of leaks, lost shingles, and other damage. That’s why you must prepare your roof in the fall. If you’re not sure where to begin, follow these three maintenance tips.

How to Maintain Your Roof This Fall

1. Clean Your Gutters

During the summer, it’s normal for leaves and other debris to build up in your gutters. This debris can create clogs that prevent your gutters from draining rainwater off your roofing. Without proper drainage, you may face water-related issues like leaks, mold, and sagging gutters.

Protect your home by cleaning out your gutters before winter arrives. Grab a ladder, rubber gloves, and a gutter scoop or trowel, and remove as much debris as you can. Remove any blockages from the drains and spouts as well. Then flush the gutters with a garden hose.

2. Trim Trees

roofingHeavy winter rains and winds can cause trees limbs to snap and fall on your home. That’s why you should trim any trees on your property, removing branches that hang near or over your roof. Along with protecting your home from damage, this step decreases the number of leaves that will end up in the gutters. If you don’t have tree trimming experience, call a professional.

3. Inspect Your Attic

Repairing small roof leaks in the fall can prevent major water damage in the winter. Typically, you’ll find the first signs of leaks under the roof. Take a flashlight to your uppermost floor and inspect the ceiling for warped wood, mold or mildew, and stained insulation.

Also, keep an eye out for signs of rodents, such as droppings, nests, and chewed wires. Rats and other pests can damage your insulation and pipes, increasing your roof’s risk of weather-related damage in winter. Call a pest control company to solve the problem before it’s too late.
