The Do's & Don'ts of Storing Paintings, Anchorage, Alaska

There may come a time when you must place precious and valuable paintings in a storage unit. Take the necessary steps to prepare, as artwork that’s stored improperly is subject to tears, stains, and scratches. Here are a few tips to help ensure your valuables last in storage.

Do:

Use a climate-controlled storage unit.

Climate-controlled units keep humidity in check and prevent extreme temperature fluctuations. Humidity causes unwanted changes to the artwork—moisture will penetrate the wood frame and fabric canvas, making the painting swell and distort. High heat can also cause warping, while cool temperatures will make the artwork contract.

Pack effectively.

The canvas should be covered in acid-free paper made without wood pulp to prevent smudging and fading. Once it’s secured, wrap the entire piece of artwork in plastic to prevent the frame from being jostled or broken in transit. Choose a box that’s a suitable size for the painting and fill it with other packing materials, like plastic foam peanuts or paper.

Don’t:

Stack them.

A rack will stabilize paintings and prevent pressure from distorting them. Never lay artwork on concrete floors, as they can absorb residual moisture from the ground.

Neglect security.

If your artwork has monetary or sentimental value, place it in a storage unit with high security. Look for a facility that uses controlled access to ensure only authorized individuals are on the premises. The storage center should also be monitored to ensure your belongings are protected.
