As a driver, an auto collision is the number one outcome to avoid. It’s dangerous for you, your passengers, and other people nearby, and can be expensive if you need a trip to the hospital or the auto body shop afterward. While not all accidents are preventable, you can avoid most by making smart decisions on and off the road.

How to Prevent Car Accidents

1. Perform Car Repair & Maintenance

The better your car’s condition, the less likely it is to get in an auto collision. For example, if you rotate and change the tires frequently, they’ll provide more effective traction, so you can stop or turn more sharply to avoid obstacles. If you have the car’s frame repaired after a minor accident, it will be stronger and better able to protect you in a crash.

2. Follow the Rules of the Road

Auto CollisionWhen you obey traffic laws and use signals, you help communicate to other drivers where you’re going to be, so they’ll stay out of your path. At the same time, you should practice defensive driving by paying close attention to the road and watching for hazards. For instance, identify blind corners, driveways where someone might back out, and places where people are likely to cross the road. Following these rules will make you better able to predict potential problems and avoid auto collisions.

3. Avoid Risky Conditions

Driving at night causes more accidents than during the day because of the reduced visibility and the likelihood that you’ll be tired. Storms create wet, slippery roads and affect visibility. Whenever possible, avoid driving in these conditions.

However, if you’re just starting out as a driver or are new to this kind of weather, it’s smart to practice. You’ll then be more familiar with how your car responds if you do ever have to drive in poor conditions. Choose a familiar area close to home with good visibility to practice all-weather driving, and drive slower than you would in ideal conditions.
