An automatic gate at the base of your driveway can add security and style to your property. The fixture is designed to open and close on command, either by detecting your vehicle or using a code or key. It’s also fairly easy to maintain when you take these essential steps.

4 Tips for Maintaining an Automatic Gate

1. Lubricate Moving Parts

Automatic gates use hinges and wheels to open and close. These parts require lubrication to reduce friction and keep everything moving smoothly.

If the parts are open, your installer may provide you with lubricant or recommend a product to use a few times per year. If they’re enclosed, these parts likely need to be lubricated less frequently, so it can be completed during your annual service.

2. Remove Pest Infestations

However, pests can sometimes break into those areas and damage the wires. If you notice any wasp nests or ant colonies around the gate, call an exterminator to have them removed. You can also invest in preventive treatment.

3. Keep It Clean

An automatic gate should continue looking polished for years, as long as you keep it clean. Dirt and debris can sometimes scratch the surface, stain the finish, or contribute to rust.

Hose off the gate every few months, and wipe it down with a soft cloth and mild detergent, or whatever cleaner your installer recommends, about once a year.

4. Test It Regularly

You likely use your automatic gate regularly, so you should be able to tell if anything seems off with it. For example, if there’s a squeaky noise when it moves, it may need extra lubrication, or if the controls stop working, you may need electrical help. However, if you don’t pay much attention to the gate when coming and going, test it periodically, so you can observe how everything is working and call for help if needed.
